You Know No Matter Where We Are...

I see the moon and the moon sees me.
The moon sees the somebody I can´t see.
So god bless the moon and god bless me.
And god bless the somebody I can´t see.

I´ve been thinking a lot about leaving. Not aboult leaving here. Just leaving.

Everyone I meet in Cuenca is from Cuenca. Or they are retired folks from the states who come here to rent a fancy apartment for $100 bucks a month and wear ponchos to try and fit in. But they are a different story entirely.

My family here can´t understand why I would ever go to school somewhere that only allows me to visit my loved ones twice a year. It is a completely foreign concept to them.

¨So your family is very wealthy and you fly home on the weekends?¨

No...

¨What do you mean it took you less time to fly here than to fly to your college??¨

...

It is interesting really. People aren´t here because they feel stuck either. They have everything they need; family, food, friends, traditions. We have been talking about all of these cultural differences in class as well. The difference between living to work and working to live. Striving for individual success vs. peace in the community. I love thinking about all of these differences. I don´t think that anything is better than another, they are just different. That´s why we travel I suppose, to learn about other ways of living. Take a little from here, take a little from there, construct your own reality. It is all very fascinating.

  4. You've hit the nail on the head, Juli--that is why we travel. If only it were more ingrained in American culture that young people get away and expand their horizons. We would have a much more sane and tolerant society if that were the case. Keep up your awesome observations!!
